Service Department Bike of the Week: 1982 Harley-Davidson Wide Glide

Feb. 17 2023 Miscellaneous By Brian Kotulka

Our Service Department bike of the week goes this stunning 1982 Harley-Davidson Wide Glide.  Do you know that feeling when you walk into a Harley Davidson Dealership and that one bike just catches your eye? That was exactly what happened back in 1982.  Seeing the bright Candy Red paint, wide front-end stance and spoked rims made this owner fall in love.

Back when these were new, they only cost $6200!  The decades of riding have taken their toll on this bike.  The owner has some ideas for improvements but life has a way of changing the course of dreams once dreamt.  Small upgrades were added along the way but nothing close to what was about to happen.

When we received this project back in January of 2022 it was stripped down to the frame.  The frame and tins had been already painted a gorgeous Crimson over Brickyard Red.  However, it was only after we received the several thousand dollars’ worth of chrome plating that we realized the love and passion the owner had for his Wide Glide.  Afterwards we shipped off the engine and transmission to be completely refurbished.

Slowly the motorcycle began to take shape but this owner had plans for our very own Rick Petko to fabricate a few new "One Off" pieces for it.  The owner wanted to add a comfortable and functional style handlebar and Rick was able to deliver.  We kept the geometry and hand positioning simple and perfectly positioned for the owner’s comfort.

Next came the exhaust, no small feat.  While some companies still manufacture exhaust for this era motorcycle nothing caught the owner’s attention with that "eureka" moment.  We custom cut and created 1 3/4" upswept exhaust that sounds and looks exactly like what he had envisioned for his Wide Glide.

Now, almost complete, this Wide Glide will only be here until Wednesday!  The owner was kind enough to allow us to showcase his masterpiece for the public to view.  Only the upholsterer, for a handmade seat, is left to finalize this journey that he had allowed us to experience with him.
